Collaborative project: Reliable bee management systems to help to reduce colony losses – an approach that is based on knowledge transfer – Subproject 1

Project

Project code: 2813301507
Contract period: 01.02.2008 - 31.01.2011
Budget: 168,354 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Colony losses are a real threat to beekeeping in general in most European countries. Practical beekeepers now need a help, which will be promoted fast within this community. This is also necessary in order to have a future perspective for this essential agricultural segment. Beside all known negative side effects, inclusive the economic losses which result from repeated colony losses, the actual situation will also hinder newcomers to start with beekeeping. In this actual project, we focus on the starting-points, which enable the beekeepers to keep healthy bee colonies and the potential to harvest a good crop. Both schemata 'The Celle beekeeping management system of rotation” and 'The modern Hohenheim beekeeping system” are suitable for professionals and hobbyists. Based on scientific evaluation the two schemata are checked for aspects that can be optimized in order to help that many beekeepers are willing to keep bees on a managed level instead of a 'bee holder” level. After one project year we already can focus on the aspects of building nucs and Varroa control which show the needs for optimization. Based on knowledge transfers a growing number of beekeepers are directly involved in this project, which helps to optimize these two existing bee keeping management schemata also from the beekeepers perspective. Later these beekeepers will act as 'multipliers”. We hope to initiate finally a system of help for beekeepers which multiplies by the system of 'pyramid selling”.
