Project code: MRI-OG-08-2021-1
Contract period: 01.03.2021 - 30.04.2024
Purpose of research: Applied research

The harvest losses due to fungal infestation are steadily increasing worldwide. Fungal species such as Aspergillus, Fusarium, Penicillium and Alternaria in particular often lead to food being contaminated with harmful mycotoxins even after harvest. There are legal limit values worldwide for the most important mycotoxins.
This is not yet the case with Alternaria mycotoxins, despite the mutagenic and cell-toxic effects that have been demonstrated for some of these toxins. According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), this is due, among other things, to an apparent lack of sound research data. Alternaria mycotoxins are common and sometimes in high concentrations in many plant foods. Baby food is also regularly affected.
The present project will use a multidisciplinary approach to clarify important research questions and thus expand the database for better risk assessment and sound policy advice on this topic.
