Collaborative project: Development of an AI-based energy-optimized lighting system for urban indoor plant cultivation - subproject A (LightSaverAI)

Project

Project code: 2818910A20
Contract period: 15.04.2022 - 14.04.2025
Budget: 356,294 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: crop production, diagnostics, food analysis, AI Artificial Intelligence, vegetable production

The main goal of LightSaverAI is to create the basis for an intelligent production system for indoor farms in urban areas. This system measures chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlFl) as a dimension of the photosynthesis rate and various environmental parameters online and evaluates them using AI approaches. In this way, the current light requirement of a plant is analyzed and an LED exposure module is adjusted via a controller so that the plant continuously receives the required exposure and environmental parameters depending on the growth phase. The need for such systems is of particular interest in the global indoor farming sector in order to be able to produce high-quality plants in a resource-efficient manner. The production system can ideally exploit the potential of LED technology by optimizing the irradiance and spectral composition both temporally and spatially. In this way, the maximum photosynthesis rate is achieved with minimal energy consumption. In addition, it offers the possibility of adapting other environmental parameters to it in the long term. In LightSaverAI, this application scenario (TRL2) is transferred to a laboratory-scale experimental setup for indoor farms (TRL 4). In LightSaverAI, this application scenario (TRL 2) is transferred to a laboratory-scale test setup for indoor farms (TRL 4). At the end of the project, the general suitability of the technologies developed here will be proven on a laboratory scale
