In 2020, the sheep population of Lower Saxony was 180,000. That means ten percent of the German stock. Sheep play an important role in landscape conservation, for example in preserving heathlands and dikes of Lower Saxony. They are particularly at risk and were exposed to 40 percent of wolf attacks in Germany. 1,400 sheep were injured or killed. The need for protective measures in Lower Saxony is therefore particularly high. In Lower Saxony, sheep are protected by fences and dogs. In other regions, such as South Africa, collars have been used to protect sheep herds against predator attacks. Based on this, shepherds and a company that specialized in electronics and software solutions are developing their own collar model. Sensors in the collar should detect an attack based on the movement pattern of the sheep and send out signals that stop the wolf attack. At the same time, the shepherds should be informed about the incident via smartphone. The collars are tested by two sheep farms in Wendland and in the region of Cuxhaven. Both have faced wolf attacks before.
