Collaborative project: Extended certification of disposable and reusable packaging as an incentive and control instrument for the creation of innovations for the reduction of plastic packaging along the food chain - subproject A (innoCErt)

Project

Project code: 281A708A20
Contract period: 15.08.2022 - 14.08.2025
Budget: 416,800 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: knowledge transfer, networking, packaging, food processing

Manufacturers are increasingly advertising the recyclability of the product packaging they place on the market and thus want to demonstrate a high level of environmental compatibility. However, the question arises whether the assessment of the recyclability of packaging is sufficient as a label and assessment standard for ecological packaging. An assessment of the circular economy capability, which takes into account reuse and recyclability of both (plastic) disposable and reusable packaging in the food sector, could promote ecologically ambitious packaging solutions here and create new incentives. This is precisely where the InnoCErt project comes in. To this end, the project partners from the (waste disposal) industry, research and administration are generating an improved knowledge base of the use phase of packaging solutions within the framework of real laboratories as an innovation research space, developing evaluation and test procedures for circular economy capability and networking stakeholders for innovative packaging solutions within the framework of innovation workshops. Furthermore, the design of certification as an incentive and control instrument and the determination of the necessary political framework conditions are being investigated as part of a policy dialog to strengthen packaging avoidance.
