The overarching goal is to test the genetic resources of chickpea (Cicer arietinum) and grass pea (Lathyrus sativus) for their suitability for cultivation in Germany in order to expand the range of crops for conventional and organic farmers. Both species are very well adapted to dry and warm climate conditions. They thus represent promising alternatives to widely cultivated legumes such as peas or field beans, which are showing increasingly lower yield stability due to climate change. In the project, genetic resources are therefore identified for both crops and tested for their suitability for regional cultivation in order to provide interested farmers with suitable genotypes. The selection of chickpeas is aimed for locations with high temperatures, while the grass pea is also suitable for cooler locations with sandy soils, where drought stress is to be expected in the future due to climate change. In this way, the various climate regions in Germany are included as comprehensively as possible in the project.
