Pre-breeding and development of breeding criteria for bush beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) for use as a grain crop in Germany
Project
Project code: 2820EPS037
Contract period: 01.01.2023
- 31.12.2025
Budget: 90,008 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: climate protection, climate protection, sustainability, plant genetic resources, other legumes
The project aims to test the suitability of cultivation by screening genetic resources, lines and varieties of bush bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. ssp. vulgaris var. nanus) and, from this, to develop breeding criteria for bush bean as dry beans for the grain harvest. The breeding criteria are to be implemented in the first crossings, which lay the foundation for the further breeding of bush beans as threshing crop. This opens up another species and new varieties for the domestic cultivation of grain legumes under changed weather conditions in Germany. In detail, the following objectives are pursued: • Development and investigation of genetic resources and existing varieties from other cultivation regions to establish new species for changed weather conditions in Germany. • Development of breeding criteria such as cooling tolerance, duration of vegetation, yield and phenotypic characteristics for use as a threshing crop, such as determined growth and less lodging. • Implementation of the relevant breeding criteria in new crosses of common beans that are adapted to the weather conditions and modern agriculture in Germany. • With the breeding of common beans as threshing crop, the domestic production of grain legumes is strengthened. • The diversity, the extent of cultivation and the yields of grain legumes are increased. The project partners are Kultursaat e.V. (lead), the Erfurt University of Applied Sciences with the field of organic crop production and the Bavarian State Institute for Agriculture. The screening takes place at 3 locations. A location near Kassel (loamy soil), Erfurt (black soil in drought stress) and in Freising (sandy loamy soil). The locations differ in soil and climatic conditions.
