Project code: 2815DOKP16
Contract period: 01.07.2016 - 15.07.2020
Budget: 114,490 Euro
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
Keywords: market, market information/market transparency, knowledge transfer, networking, consumer behaviour, consumer expectations, poultry

Many African countries import large quantities of frozen meat products such as poultry from overseas. As this trend is rising, so is the criticism of poultry meat products export by the EU to African countries, where food insecurity is often prevalent. Not much is known however on the demand for poultry meat products or the impact on individual demand behavior in those African countries, which import large quantities of meat. Understanding consumer expectations, their food choice decisions and the determinants thereof will contribute to develop or improve agricultural and food policies. The analysis of the demand for chicken meat in the poultry meat importing country Ghana is the focus of this research project. Especially the effect of poultry meat imports on the food security in Ghana will be examined. A survey of chicken meat purchasers will be carried out with a focus on food markets in the urban environment as imported poultry meat is predominantly available in urban areas. The survey will be implemented on the basis of a standardized questionnaire, adapted to the target region and its particularities. After data collection, a statistical model explaining demand behaviour for chicken meat will be developed and the survey’s data analysed accordingly. Trade flows between Africa and the EU, current trade policies and market balances regarding poultry meat will also be considered to gain a comprehensive picture of the demand and supply side and to assess the potential of international agricultural trade to improve food security.
