This project is being carried out in cooperation with the BMBF-funded Trans-SEC project in a semi-arid region of Tanzania. Using two models (SWAT and APEX), two currently tested upgrading strategies, namely micro fertiliser (MF) and rainwater harvesting (RWH), are to be transferred from the local field scale to other regions of Tanzania in order to improve regional food safety. Local precipitation variability and small-scale agricultural risk minimisation strategies are analysed. The results will be made available to policy makers to improve the framework conditions for agricultural production. This three-year doctoral thesis is supervised by ZALF, Humboldt University Berlin and Sokoine University in Tanzania. Field work and data collection take place in Tanzania.
