Collaborative project: Sugar beet of the future: Model- and data-based yield scenarios for a climate-adapted selection in breeding - subproject A (Beets4Future)

Project

Project code: 281D118A21
Contract period: 01.03.2023 - 30.04.2026
Budget: 273,135 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: plant breeding, crop production, climate change adaptation, abiotic stress, forecast, sugar beet

The project is intended to investigate the impact on the yield of sugar beet which results from the current range of climate scenarios and in which way plant breeding can adapt. Thereby, an adapted choice of selection locations and/or the integration of indirect selection characteristics are hypothesized as reasonable adaptation strategies. These approaches may be used directly for decision-making in sugar beet breeding, in order to be able to react better to future climate changes. Methodologically, a hitherto hardly used combination of phenotyping technology in field tests, model-based analysis and interpretation of the phenotyping data as well as scenario calculations, including relevant climate scenarios, is used. State-of-the-art ensembles of regional climate models are used to evaluate the effects of climate change. The spatial focus of the project is on the cultivation and breeding areas in Central Europe that are relevant and comparable for current and future growth conditions of sugar beet in Germany. Only current and future abiotic stress associated with climate change is considered within the project.
