Collaborative project: Partial chemical recycling of packaging materials made from PLA - subproject B (ZykloPLA)
Project
Project code: 281A712B20
Contract period: 01.01.2023
- 30.11.2025
Budget: 274,645 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: closed loop recycling management, sustainability, packaging, plastics, recycling, resource conservation, polymers
With regard to the establishment of a sustainable economy, bio-based plastics such as PLA represent one of the possibilities for lowering the consumption of fossil raw materials and reducing CO2 emissions for the unavoidable feeding of virgin materials into the plastic cycle. The project addresses the development of a chemical recycling process for PLA materials up to demonstration scale and the integration of a corresponding demonstration plant into a synthesis line for flexible PLA grades. The PLA recyclates to be used come from post-industrial and accessible post-consumer sources. The main objectives of the project are i) the development of a suitable overall process for the production of dilactide from PLA recyclates, ii) the development of a matrix for lactide yield and quality depending on PLA recyclate input qualities and process parameters, and iii) proof of the virgin quality of PLA from such a recycling process. With the construction of the demonstration recycling plant that is integrated into a synthesis plant, the circular production of a bio-based plastic could be realized in Germany for the first time.
