Collaborative project: Monomaterial based barrier films with excellent recycling properties for food packaging - subproject F (Mobile_BLE)
Project
Project code: 281A713F20
Contract period: 15.02.2023
- 14.02.2026
Budget: 55,741 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: closed loop recycling management, food technology, food engineering, packaging, production, sustainability, polymers, meat, plastics
In the "Mobile" project, monomaterial films made of polyethylene and polypropylene with barrier layers are being developed that will be fully recyclable. This will be shown on demonstrators and the recycling properties will be analyzed and evaluated. For this purpose, the demonstrators will be made from both recycled and "virgin material" and compared. Packaging tests with food products will help to assess the effects of product contact on the new films and coatings (e.g. through migration), as well as on the recycling behavior, and thereby evaluate their suitability as a packaging solution. To implement the project, film formulations will be optimized, the films will be manufactured and subsequently coated with inorganic and/or hybrid polymer barrier coatings. Comprehensive characterization will be carried out with regard to mechanical properties, sealability, sterilizability and barrier values (oxygen, water vapor, migration), among other things. An assessment of recyclability and associated life cycle analysis (LCA) is also planned, as is communication of the project results to relevant stakeholders such as equipment manufacturers, converters and contract packers. The project consortium, consisting of two film manufacturers, a converter, a special coating company, a service provider specialized in LCA, as well as a competence network in the food sector and a research company represented by two institutes, covers the entire value chain and offers the opportunity to sustainably integrate the developed technology into the market.
