Collaborative project: Promoting reusable solutions to reduce single-use plastic service packaging through take-back automation, point-of-sale interventions and opportunities for digitalisation in user behavior - subproject A (REPAID)

Project

Project code: 281A714A20
Contract period: 01.01.2023 - 31.12.2024
Budget: 323,829 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: sustainability, closed loop recycling management, multi-cycle systems, decontamination, packaging, local supply, recycling, environment and nature protection

The aim of the REPAID project is to comprehensively examine how reusable systems in the area of service packaging can or must be designed in order to drastically reduce packaging waste from single-use packaging in out-of-home consumption and to make them economically viable in the long term. The focus is on increasing the rates of use, return and reuse through social and technical innovations. To this end, the project covers the specific decision-making situations from the perspective of the users (purchase/loan, return) as well as the providers (positioning, issue, return, processing, distribution). Another goal is the formulation of a ready-to-implement strategy for the integration of different, competing reusable systems in the out-of-home sector. From a technical point of view, it is to be defined how the technical infrastructure of the systems must be set up and which requirements the individual system components have to fulfil. With its integrated approach, REPAID makes an important contribution to the successful establishment of material-efficient packaging solutions in out-of-home consumption. At the same time, based on new scientific findings on consumer behaviour and desires, innovative incentive systems are being developed to bring about customer acceptance and behavioural changes with regard to reusable solutions and thus successfully implement the future mandatory reusability in the catering sector. By using synergies of different approaches and developing a strategy for an integrated reusable system in out-of-home consumption, including necessary technical developments and the transfer to delivery services, REPAID lays the foundation for building a successful reusable system in Germany.
