Knowledge transfer and demonstration network for expanding and improving the cultivation and utilisation of grain legumes in Germany (Koordination-Wissen)
Project
Project code: 2821EPS029
Contract period: 07.02.2023
- 31.12.2025
Budget: 221,340 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: bean, pea, animal feed, human nutrition, climate protection, market information/ market transparency, soybean, animal nutrition, value chains
The aim of the knowledge transfer and demonstration network (LeguNet) is to support the cultivation, processing and utilisation of grain legumes in Germany and to better match demand and supply. For this purpose, stakeholders from research, extension, breeding, production, processing, trade and associations are networked in a grain legume network. Model value chains and practical examples are demonstrated for field bean, pea, lupin, soybean and other grain legumes. New utilisation and sales opportunities for feed and food in the conventional and organic sector will be identified, supported and developed. Know-how is communicated to the various stakeholders and ideas for utilisation or processing are communicated through different channels. The knowledge acquired through R&D projects is also disseminated within the network. The results from the network as well as new ideas for improving value creation are continuously communicated to the actors in the value chain through personal talks, consultation, professional events, publications or the network website. This creates an intensive exchange within the network and beyond. Through the expertise of the network partners, the current challenges in cultivation and utilisation are addressed promptly and possible solutions are worked out. With the diverse approaches, the scope of cultivation of grain legumes in Germany is to be increased and the expansion of cultivation sustainably secured. The network is coordinated by supra-regional coordination units for knowledge transfer, advisory services, value chains: 'mass flows/producer association', 'conventional animal', 'conventional human nutrition', 'human/animal organic' as well as biodiversity and environmental services. These cooperate with the regional management operating at federal state level. A total of 17 partners from 10 federal states form the network.
