Utilisation of genetic resources of narrow-leafed lupin (Lupinus angustifolius L.) to secure low alkaloid content for feed and food usage (Nutzung genetischer Ressourcen der Schmalblättrigen Lupine)

Project

Project code: 2820EPS038
Contract period: 15.03.2023 - 14.03.2026
Budget: 124,286 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: animal feed, human nutrition, ingredients, climate protection, climate protection, lupin, sustainability, plant genetic resources

The aim of the project is to use breeding research and breeding strategies to improve the quality of the narrow-leafed sweet lupin for use in the food and feed sector and thus improve its value for cultivation. By including previously untapped genetic resources, the genetic diversity of the existing breeding material of narrow-leafed sweet lupin shall be enriched and the genetic yield potential of this crop species be secured and further improved. The focus here is on the development of new varieties with both, environmentally stable low alkaloid content and high yield potential. For this purpose, various innovative breeding approaches are pursued: (1) Conducting a genome-wide association study using a genetically diverse set of alkaloid-rich and poor genetic resources (PGRs, varieties, breeding lines), (2) genetic and functional characterization of alkaloid synthesis by transcription analysis, (3 ) Development of molecular markers for linkage analysis and marker-assisted selection, (4) genetic analysis of segregating populations and (5) pyramidization of gene variants for low alkaloid content. These approaches are supported by comprehensive analytics for qualitative and quantitative determination of plant and seed alkaloid content and field trials in different environments. The results of this project are immediately implemented in prebreeding and thus contribute to the development of new sustainable varieties of the narrow-leafed sweet lupin.
