Collaborative project: Reduced emissions and increased animal welfare through clean, attractive floors in outdoor climate barns and outdoor runs in pig farming - subproject B (RETsaBAAS)

Project

Project code: 281C603B21
Contract period: 15.04.2023 - 14.04.2026
Budget: 278,416 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: emissions, stable building , farmyard manure, climate protection, husbandry techniques, pigs

Improving animal welfare and reducing air emissions are important key elements for sustainable pig farming. Therefore the project aims to automate the frequent and regular cleaning of soiled surfaces in outdoor climate stalls and outdoor runs, which is necessary for reduction of emissions. With the use of newly developed, innovative cleaning robots and above-ground manure removal scraper systems, as well as combined manure removal techniques the removal of faeces, urine and organic material for bedding and occupation in the pens should be automated. In addition the attractiveness of the outdoor runs should be increased for the pigs by the litter. Pen systems with digitally controllable doors and gates that are tailored to the manure removal systems represent another innovation. The autonomous manure removal systems should take animal activity into account and support the animal behaviour by interval-controlled elements such as litter and cooling. With the support of artificial intelligence algorithms to recognize various characeristics and by linking them with the control of the manure removal technology, the emitting areas should be minimized, the temporal activity of the manure removal systems should be optimized and the emissions (especially ammonia) should be greatly reduced.
