Collaborative project: Genetic analysis and modeling of wheat-rust interaction to develop stable, multi-resistant wheat varieties - subproject B (RustHealth)

Project

Project code: 281D120B21, JKI-RS-08-3460
Contract period: 01.09.2023 - 31.08.2028
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Keywords: wheat, resistance, black rust, breeding, leaf rust

At 13 locations, 400 observation plots are grown annually. Throughout the project period, results of rust bonitures from multi-site trials are transmitted. In parallel, single-spore inoculations are carried out based on the respective previous year's collections of prevalent rust races in order to test the effectiveness of resistance detached from environmental effects for individual isolates. For this purpose, established leaf segment tests are measured on the Macrobot platform. The respective infection data from laboratory and field studies will be used for association studies. In addition, new field isolates will be individually phenotypically assigned by their virulence spectrum and isolates will be broadly genotypically categorized using already established SSR markers (Pst, Pgt) at the JKI A. The collected data on resistance to stripe, leaf and black rust will be provided annually to the partner IPK for biometric analyses. Finally, pathogen populations will be sequenced and the genetic architecture of G×G×E interactions analyzed. The RustHealth project will extend the existing WBLUP models for the prediction of G×G×E interactions. Validation of the predictions will be performed by resampling methods.
