Climate change

Project code: EIP-Agri-NI-2023-FWKW
Contract period: 01.01.2023 - 31.12.2025
Budget: 499,586 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: forestry, climate change

As a result of forest dieback, hundreds of thousands of hectares in Germany need to be reforested. The use of seedlings from tree nurseries meets capacity limits and is also viewed critically for reasons of a possibly lower resilience of the plants. To address climate change-related challenges, the FORESTFORWARD project aims to improve reforestation by seeding and improve mapping and monitoring using a 5-component approach. First, a rapid germination test will be further developed for application to forest seed so that pre-tested seed is used for seeding. Second, a germination-promoting seed coating will be developed to increase germination rates and effectively provide the right nutrients to the growing crop. Third, the seed is incorporated into a compressed pellet that contains growth adjuvants. Fourth, a planting apparatus that can be used in an uncomplicated way is developed, which pokes a hole in the forest soil into which the pressed pellet along with the seed is placed. Fifth, sensor-based measurement data from small-scale site mapping will be visualized for monitoring purposes.
