Project code: EIP-Agri-NI-2023-DSKBLMI
Contract period: 01.01.2023 - 31.12.2025
Budget: 488,462 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: pest/disease control, food industry

Combining photonically induced processes with plasma-based technologies for the sustainable inactivation of microorganisms on bulk agricultural materials for industrial application. Manufacturers and suppliers of natural-based herbs, teas and spices are often struggling with contamination by micro- or microorganisms, such as fungi, bacteria or mites. The project's solution approach is to combine photonic processes (e.g. UV sources) with plasma-based technologies (atmospheric pressure plasmas and plasma-activated fluids) in order to effectively and sustainably inactivate microorganisms and to achieve a reduction of storage pests such as mites and insects on natural raw materials. Based on the technologies mentioned above, the aim is to develop an overall system that prepares bulk agricultural products for further use without the use of chemical processes, increases their shelf life and enable them to be consumed safely.
