Sustainable, herbicide-free agriculture through automated, labour-saving weed control in grassland, geared towards animal welfare
Project
Project code: EIP-Agri-Bay-2023-LGMTH
Contract period: 01.01.2023
- 31.12.2025
Budget: 69,357 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: farming equipment, animal husbandry
In grassland, dock, ragwort and other weeds cause yield losses of up to 40% and can even kill cows and horses. Since the EU organic regulation prohibits organic farmers from using herbicides, they are dependent on the strenuous and timeconsuming manual control with a chisel. The aim of the Project is to create a concept for the development and construction of an independently working attachment for the tractor that destroys the dock without herbicides in the grassland. Unlike previous solutions, this does not create a large hole in the ground, nor can the sorrel sprout and grow back. The advantage for the farmer lies in the sustainable, simple, cost-effective and labour-saving method of ensuring high forage quality. With the project, a significant step towards competitive, sustainable and animal-friendly grassland management is achieved.
