Collaborative project: Individualized support of calf health through the use of specific colostrum additives and phytogenic substances - subproject A (CalPhy)

Project

Project code: 281C806A21
Contract period: 01.09.2023 - 31.08.2026
Budget: 365,439 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: cattle, animal health, animal feed, additive, prevention, antibiotics

The overall objective of the "CalPhy" project is to reduce the incidence of diseases requiring treatment and thus counteract increased losses in calf husbandry. By using high-quality supplements, Phytobiotics Futterzusatzstoffe GmbH (Phytobiotics) and the Institute of Animal Nutrition of the University of Veterinary Medicine, Hannover, aim to improve the overall supply of calves and thus promote animal health, welfare and performance. Specifically, a partially individualized feeding concept for the particularly sensitive animals within the animal groups will be developed for practical use. An adequate supply of colostrum is of fundamental influence for the calves' resistance and health. Lightweight newborns, and in some cases weakened calves by also in well-managed herds unavoidable situations (mechanical birth problems, etc.), are particularly affected by an insufficient colostrum supply. These calves need additional protection so that the risk of an above-average drop in colostral immune protection does not increase their susceptibility to infection. To reduce the risk of disease to the unavoidable minimum, further measures are useful based on sensitive detection of initial signs of disease or predisposing situations. Feed additives can be used to strengthen calves and thus promote their health. Especially phytogenic additives have the potential to further reduce the need for antibiotic treatments in well-managed farms. The overall aim of the CalPhy project is to reduce the incidence of disease in calf rearing and thereby increase animal health and welfare. Thus, the project can make a substantial contribution to the promotion of the sustainable performance of the agricultural economy with the best possible promotion of animal welfare in agriculture.
