The overall objective of the project is to improve the performance of the organic husbandry system for dual-purpose chickens under the aspects of resource-efficient raw material procurement, optimisation of feeding and animal welfare. The experimental design follows the basic assumption that dual-purpose chickens of lower metabolic activity have a higher tolerance with regard to feed components and nutrient density. To this end, on the one hand, the project looks at the animals' requirements by using dual-purpose hens with moderate laying performance and comparing them with high-yielding laying hybrids. On the other hand, the proportion of methionine-rich feed components, which are scarce on the market or whose requirements can only be met with the help of imports, will be reduced by exploiting the feed intake regulation capacity of the animals and by using insects or macroalgae as regional protein sources. The aim of the project is to identify new ways of optimising the husbandry of laying hens and fattening animals with regard to regional raw material procurement and reduced human nutrition competition. The focus here is on the integration of two different insect species (Acheta domesticus/n.n.) and macroalgae (Palmaria palmata/n.n.) into the feeding regimes of various utility crosses currently used in the organic farming sector. In the development of the above-mentioned alternative protein sources, a further focus of the project is the detailed examination of the upstream production cycles of the feed components and the creation of nutrient profiles. The analysis of the production cycles is carried out under the aspects of resource-efficient production by means of utilisation of material by-products, selected aspects of environmental impact, product hygiene, feed law aspects, integration potentials in existing feed chains as well as potential analyses for business optimisation.
