Development of roadmaps to improve the supply of organically produced seed and planting material by 2036 - Bioland Beratung GmbH

Project

Project code: 2822OE195
Contract period: 01.09.2023 - 31.08.2026
Budget: 233,680 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: agricultural policy, market information / market transparency, crop production, seed and planting material, organic farming

The objective of the project is to improve the availability of organically produced seed and planting material of suitable varieties for organic cultivation in Germany and to create the basis for being able to establish availability in the future. Existing obstacles to an expansion of organic seed and planting material production are to be identified and recommendations for action for the sector and politics are to be developed. Within the framework of the project, relevant crops or crop groups will be analysed in expert working groups with regard to the availability and demand for organically produced seed and planting material for the next 13 years (up to the deadline of 2036) and concrete roadmaps will be developed. The aim is to determine where and how the course must be set so that in the medium term crops can be placed in category I or exemptions can be reduced. As a result of the project, on the one hand, crop group-specific roadmaps are being developed, which show fields of action in order to be able to (at least partially) cover the demand for organically produced seed and planting material by 2036. The roadmaps name and prioritise concrete measures that can be used to develop the fields of action. The preconditions under which the measures can be implemented are also named. Thus, between the end of the project applied for here in 2026 and the end of the exemptions in 2036, very targeted activities and projects can be initiated on the basis of the roadmaps. On the other hand, the project also makes visible the role of trade and processing of organic food in the choice of PVM. If necessary, trade and processing can be increasingly involved following the project.
