Collaborative project: Drugs effective against nosemosis of honey bees – Subproject 1
Project
Project code: 2813400707
Contract period: 01.04.2008
- 30.09.2011
Budget: 367,436 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
EvA - Development of drugs effective against nosemosis by a 2-stage test-system Aim of the project EvAwas to search for drug candidates active against nosemosis of honeybees, which shouldn't accumulate in bee products. Two chemical lead structureswere identified active against Nosemaspp. via an invivo-assay using caged honeybees. Analyses for bee tolerance, economy and acceptance by bees and beekeepers led to an easy and safe to handle option for formulation of the potential drugs. For production of the preparations appropriate robust and upscalable procedures were established. An innovative cell culture based invitro-test-system was developed in the course of the project. It was used to screen a comprehensive collection of more than 2,000 promising conformationally restricted synthetic peptides. One naturally occurring peptidemixture showed anti-nosemosis activity. The new bee and environmentally friendly drug candidates, which were developed within EvA, contribute to the advancement of animal health and provide essential knowledge for fundamental research.
