Collaborative project: Development of biocontrol measures for the biological degradation of fungal inoculum orginated from cereal and rape debris using the fungal antagonist Microsphaeropsis ochracea – Subproject 1
Project
Project code: 2814200106
Contract period: 01.08.2007
- 31.07.2010
Budget: 222,371 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Closer crop rotations with cereals and oilseed rape combined with reduced soil tillage has led to accumulation of inoculum of soil- and straw-borne pathogens in the upper soil layer. This increases the use of fungicides. In a collaboration of the University of Goettingen and PROPHYTA we investigated the potential of biological degradation of soil- and straw-bound inocula of major pathogens of oilseed rape and winter wheat by the mycoparasitic fungus Microsphaeropsis ochracea. Inoculum degradation by M. ochracea was highly efficient in lab and greenhouse conditions but it became insufficient the more unsterile and field-like the conditions were chosen. The reason is a low competitiveness of M. ochracea in a complex microbial environment. Consequently we were not able to detect a biocontrol effect in the field experiments. The study demonstrates the importance of microbial competitiveness for the practical utilization of potent mycoparasites.
