Collaborative project: Continuous microclimate data acquisition, processing, and transfer in vehicles for the long road transport of cattle and pigs with applicable sensor systems – Subproject 2

Project

Project code: 28153T0207
Contract period: 01.11.2007 - 31.01.2011
Budget: 161,138 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

The objective of this investigation is the technical implementation of microclimatic requirements of the 'Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport and related operations” and their verification during long transports of cattle and pigs under summer and winter field conditions in Europe. In the project, relevant statistical data for the design, minimum number, and distribution of sensors in the vehicle shall be compiled according to changes in localisation of extreme climatic conditions within the vehicle in driving or standing situations. For the animal thermoregulation factors like environmental temperature, air humidity, and air velocity are relevant in addition to internal factors like age (category), feeding, and watering and shall be taken into account for measuring the thermal burden of animals during transport. These measurements are necessary to verify the thermal thresholds set by the law. For a uniform implementation of the regulation in Europe standardized measurement and data processing techniques are a precondition to take actual measures during transport and also for the tasks of competent authorities. Together with results of the investigations on animal thermoregulation, risk based categories of measures related to animal welfare during transport shall be developed.
