Collaborative project: Optimization of sensor technology for target adapted sprayer control in vineyards – reduction of chemicals and drift – Subproject 3

Project

Project code: 2814204206
Contract period: 01.04.2008 - 30.06.2011
Budget: 170,138 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Since the early 90's, a sensor system for gap detection in the foilage was tested. Developed for reduction of losses in plant protection measurements, the acceptance on the market was rather poor. Based on this, the new 'ECO-Reflex' sensor system was realised. A new infrared sensor device, with three sensors and a process computer per unit, was developed, and, correspondent to the nozzles, on two different plant protection equipments 10 units were mounted, 5 on each side, respectively. After the optimisation of the blowers, numerous tests were performed. The results showed a loss reduction potential of about 35% overall, and a drift reduction of 90%, and 95% with the last row treated one-sided, was achieved. Compared to the old sensor system, the important innovation is the flexibility of the new sensor device, which can be adapted to different foilages by changes of the circuitry of the three single sensors, and the better performance. However, the cost of the new sensor device does not exceed the expense for the old sensor system, thus the acceptance on the market is expected to increase in the near future.
