Collaborative project: Quality related grain harvesting – Segregation of grain according to specified quality parameters on a combine harvester – Subproject 1

Project

Project code: 2815303507
Contract period: 01.12.2007 - 28.02.2010
Budget: 243,912 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

The objective of the project is to segregate grain according to specified quality parameters on a combine harvester. Quality has become an essential attribute of agricultural products and production processes in particular as a result of European Commission (EC) Regulations (e.g. regulation (EC) 178 2002). In this project, NIR/NIT spectroscopy is used to quantify grain properties and assess its quality. Advances in near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) provide means of directly quantifying grain quality parameters during the harvesting process. In addition to quantitative yield differences, cereal canopies show distinct quality variation in the harvested grain depending on small scale heterogeneity as well as crop management. In-stream sensing will allow the segregation of grain into fractions of high or low quality to meet certain specifications. This innovative harvesting technique including the use of new NIRS sensor systems and calibration are validated in field trials. The experimental set-up includes the determination of spatial variability of protein content and other quality parameters of wheat and barley in the field as well as laboratory testing of sensor-actuator interaction.
