Collaborative project: Development of latent heat storage and thermal systems for the efficient use of solar energy under glass and plastic film – Subproject 1

Project

Project code: 2815100306
Contract period: 15.11.2007 - 14.11.2011
Budget: 315,616 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

The use of excess heat from greenhouses with phase change materials reduces the amount of primary energy of greenhouse heating for ornamental plant production by 10 to 20%.This effect is increased by the use of intelligent climate control systems. The change of phase must happen within the temperature range accepted by the grown plants (10 to 25 °C). A minimum temperature difference between air and PCM of 4K for charging and discharging is required. The most efficient material was paraffine RT18HC. It turned out that most bed- and balcony plants tolerate alternating temperatures (night 10 °C; day 25 °C). High temperatures should be limited to a few hours per day in order not to increase the amount of growth inhibitors needed. Euphorbia pulcherima was more sensitive to low temperatures especially during induction period. There were promising results also with other potted and greening plants.
