Collaborative Project: Terahertz Measurement for in vivo analysis of drought stress in crops: Optooelectric measurement tool for selective breeding and cultivation – Subproject 2

Project

Project code: 2815305707
Contract period: 15.02.2008 - 14.02.2011
Budget: 290,355 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

For any plant a sufficient supply with water is essential. Alack of water leads to drought stress and heavy loss of growth. Up to date, the selection of drought resistant crop plants required a cumbersome analysis of the water content and the resulting drought stress reactions. Moreover, the living plants had to be destroyed for the measurements. The authors developed a unique device for use in the field, that determines the water content of living plant leaves immediately and nondestructively. For a test of the applicability, a field experiment was carried out with different genotypes of corn at the chair of plant breeding of the TU München. For the criteria leaf thickness and terahertz transmittivity, significant influences of both the plant treatment and the genotype difference were proved by means of a variance analysis.
