Contract period: 01.01.2000 - 01.01.2006
Purpose of research: Basic research

Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) will be applied for the reconstruction of the pathways of radioactive carbon, 14C, produced in atmospheric nuclear tests, through the biosphere and organic soil components to the refractory soil carbon fraction. The very low sample masses (0.1 to 1 mg carbon) required for AMS measurements are well suited for a detailed subdivision of soil material into significant physical and chemical fractions. This will yield important information about the stabilization mechanisms of natural organic matter in soils. The availability of archive samples from the past 50 years from agricultural testing localities will allow a detailed investigation of the mechanisms with different time constants and appropriate time resolution. Furthermore, the influence of different soil characteristics can be detected. Sampling and sample preparation for AMS measurements will be carried out in close collaboration with the other research groups of the Priority Program.
