Subproject 4: Effects on soil physical properties and plant growth in the field

Purpose of research: Basic research
The aim of this subproject is to quantify the effects of HTC-biochar on soil physical properties in comparison with compost application. Extended field experiments will be conducted simultaneously serving to take samples for soil agro-chemical (subproject 2) and biological (subproject 3) investigations. The following parameters will be measured: soil pore size distribution, pneumatic and saturated hydraulic conductivity, penetration resistance, aggregate stability, water infiltration, soil temperature, soil respiration. Moreover, growth and yield formation of spring barley, sugar beet and winter wheat will be investigated.
