Project code: BFH-III-02-2.13
Contract period: 01.01.2006 - 30.11.2007
Purpose of research: Applied research

The German government initiated the programme 'Charta für Holz' (Charter for Timber) to increase the consumption of sustainable produced timber. The programme focuses on improv-ing the competitiveness and the synergy effects of the forestry and wood industry and on achieving the highest possible added value in these sectors. In this context regional clusters are viewed as central by scientific research, policy and business. Therefore the programme 'Charta für Holz' requires an analysis of the German Forestry and Timber cluster. This analy-sis will assess the national resources and production capacities, in order to develop a suitable cluster management and to identify model areas. The Institute for Economics of the Federal Research Centre for Forestry and Forests Products was commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection to coordinate such a cluster analysis. The main fields of research are: 1.) socioeconomic effect of the timber based chain of custody on all participating actors in Germany, 2.) regional analysis and comparison of resources and pro-duction capacities based on the national forest inventory and 3.) a SWOT-analysis of the German Forestry and Timber Cluster.
