Project
Project code: 02OE612
Contract period: 01.10.2002
- 31.03.2004
Budget: 37,505 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
It was the aim of the present study to assess the health state in german organic dairy farming with regard to mastitis, lameness and metabolic disorders, to investigate possible relationships with the specific housing conditions and/or the use of preventive measures, and to point out chances for further development. The project consisted of a questionnaire study (1000 farms), on-farm investigations in a representative sub-sample of 50 farms and interviews with advisory services. Mastitis incidence ranged between 0 and 101 % (mean 33 %). There was no obvious effect of several preventive measures such as post-milking teat disinfection on mastitis incidence. Automatic stimulation pre-milking apparently reduced mastitis incidence in the respective farms. However, these results should be interpreted carefully since no multivariate data was possible due to small sample size. The average lameness prevalence was 18 % (2 - 53 %) with herds housed in cubicles showing significantly more lameness (20 %, 4 - 53) than herds on straw yard systems (10 %, 2 - 19; p
