Project code: GE 340/25-2
Contract period: 01.01.2005 - 31.12.2010
Purpose of research: Basic research

In a recently completed DFG-project, the scientific basis of the variation of outcrossing rates of cultivated and wild barley populations from semi-arid regions of the Near East has been determined as well as the inheritance of outcrossing related flowering characteristics of barley. In the present project, the outcrossing rate of cultivated barley adapted to semi-arid regions will be increased through recurrent selection for the actual trait 'outcrossing rate' employing molecular markers. The resulting parameters will be used to estimate the expected gain of selection exemplarily for inbreeding crop species. As an additional output of this study, barley populations with significantly increased outcrossing rates are expected which may be used directly in actual breeding programs to increase yield and yield-stability in the West Asia and North Africa (WANA) region.
