Project code: DFG FOR 948
Contract period: 01.01.2009 - 31.12.2010
Purpose of research: Basic research

Atmospheric carbon dioxide enrichment has been shown to reduce nitrogen concentrations in green tissues of C3 species via optimisation of nitrogen allocation within the photosynthetic apparatus with less investment in ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate-carboxylase/oxygenase (RubisCO) and the photorespiratory pathway. This leads to changed patterns of nitrogen redistribution as well as nitrogen remobilization and eventually to an earlier onset of senescence in determinated plant species. This project aims to provide inside based on new experimental data on the interac-tive effects of varying carbon (CO2) and nitrogen supply on nitrogen remobilization during senescence in two crop species with contrasting nitrogen use efficiency (NUE): (i) rapeseed which is characterised by low NUE since N resorption from early leaves before shedding is low, and (ii) barley which is characterised by high NUE due to efficient N recovery from any of the leaf generations before shedding. Experiments will be performed in a CO2 and climate chamber system under controlled climatic, soil, and plant canopy conditions involving two CO2 levels (380 and 550 µmol mol-1) in combination with three N-fertilizer supply levels (sub-optimal, optimal, supra-optimal) involving 15N. By this means, N redistribution and remobilization will be tracked at plant level and an integrated view will be provided.
