Assessment and differentiation of abiotic stresses using volatile indicators

Project

Project code: 0315530A
Contract period: 01.10.2009 - 30.09.2014
Purpose of research: Basic research

The aim of project ZS3 is the early detection and differentiation of abiotic stresses (drought and nutrient deficiency) with non-destructive and destructive methods, before the emergence of visible symptoms. Nitrogen monoxide, ethane and ethylene production in the plant will be analysed to determine their use for early stress detection. Furthermore, a reference analysis will be developed to detect metabolic, physiological and biochemical changes under stress. This analysis will be correlated with the sensor results. The reference analysis will record changes in: water balance, anti-oxidative mechanisms (including AsA, GSH/GSSH, SOD etc), carbohydrate metabolism, and also leaf compounds such as phenols, which have an influence on the chlorophyll fluorescence. The reference analysis will also be available for use by other subprojects to help determine the resolution and sensitivity of sensors and interpretation of their signals. In this subproject, methods will be developed initially with sugar beet, and then, in the later project stages, with barley. The suitability of all procedures for the characterisation of different genotypes and differentiation of stress reactions will be determined.
