Collaborative project: Indicator-Based Management System for Behavioral and Health Monitoring of Sows - Subproject 1
Project
Project code: 2813700110
Contract period: 01.11.2010
- 31.12.2013
Budget: 199,470 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Aim of the project was the conception and implementation of an indicator based monitoring system for gestating sows. The information processing system (project partner gridsolut GmbH + Co.KG.) to register the indicators feeding (eating rank, feed amount), drinking (drinking event, water amount) and walking (distance covered) of each sow individually was established on a research farm and commercial farm with group housed gestating sows and electronic sow feeding systems. During more than 18 month the University of Hohenheim did the data acquisition and, completed by observation studies and rating of integument and locomotion of the sows, derived relationships between eating, drinking and walking events and health- or behavior disorders. Consolidated sensor data as well as monitoring models as pilot modules were integrated in the herdmanagement software (project partner CLAAS Agrosystems KGaA mbH & Co KG). For larger herd sizes the potential for a possible monetary benefit could be shown.
