Collaborative project: TeraPlant: Sensors for terahertz waves - an innovative tool for modern plant breeding. Subproject 3

Project

Project code: 2814501510
Contract period: 01.02.2011 - 31.01.2014
Budget: 131,781 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

For any plant a sufficient supply with water is essential. A lack of water leads to drought stress and heavy loss of growth. Up to date, the selection of drought resistant crop plants required a cumbersome analysis of the water content and the resulting drought stress reactions. Moreover, the living plants had to be destroyed for the measurements. The authors developed a unique device for use in the field, that determines the water content of living plant leaves immediately and nondestructively. For a test of the applicability, experiments were carried out at the Institute of Plant Biology of the Technical University of Braunschweig on several species (mais (Z. mais), coffee (C. arabica), tobacco (N. tabacum), nasturtium (T. majus), sage (S. officinalis), ivy (H. helix) und tomatoe plant (S. lycopersicum). The results show a coherency between the THz phase shift (dispersion) and the relative water content of the leaf.
