Purpose of research: Applied research
Facing a sincere impact on the water resources by conventional farming in Germany it is obvious that organic farming is highly needed, e.g. for implementing the EU water framework directive. The current status quo of discharging pesticides, nitrogen, phosphorus and livestock medicine into groundwater and surface water in Germany is concisely presented. Main part focuses on how to farm organic without harming the water resources based on some agronomic basics such as organic crop rotation and nutrient management principles and strategies as well as humus- and nutrient budgeting. This forms the basis for the following chapters on how to grow pulse, forage and green manure legumes and potatoes while avoiding nitrate leaching. Also the impact of plant protection, particular using copper and of weed control is covered. Other topics are soil tillage principles using the plough regarding soil erosion, the hygienic handling, field storage and use of manure and slurry. Particular in drinking water catchments organic farming demonstrates its superiority. Selected case studies of water supply companies, of districts and of federal state authorities introduce the specific strategies, benefits and restrictions of supporting and implementing measures of organic farming.
