Collaborative project: Development and optimisation of an automatic hop picking machine – Subproject 1

Project

Project code: 2815400510
Contract period: 01.09.2011 - 31.03.2014
Budget: 71,449 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Based on the preliminary work of the private limited company Fuss, the Bavarian State Research Center for Agriculture will design a digital prototype of a system for automatic hop picking. For this purpose a mechanism for cutting of the hop vines into pieces with defined length will be developed, providing undisturbed cutting of the bulk of hop vines without significant damaging of the cones. A feeding mechanism will transport the hop vines pieces longitudinally and spread through the entire width of the mechanism to the picking device, which consist of the existing afterward picking device, a product of the private limited company Fuss. After manufacturing of the funktional prototype by the private limited company Fuss, the Bavarian State Research Center for Agriculture will carry out scientific analyses of the yield losses, damaging and quality of the cones comparing the results with the processing on a conventional picking machine. The prototype will be optimised based on the gained insights. Testing of materials and subsystems, Development of a digital prototype of a system for automatic picking and analysis of its kinematical behaviour based on simulations, Collision analysis in order to minimise the design errors and shorten the development time, Development of a functional prototype and testing of the system during the harvest concerning the operational capabilities, damaging and quality of the cones, Optimisation and testing of the improved prototype.
