Contract period: 01.04.2009
- 31.12.2010
Purpose of research: Applied research
Commission regulation (EC) No 745/2004 requires that Member States ensure that no products destined for human consumption are introduced into the Community from a third country without having been subjected to the appropriate veterinary checks. Regardless, approx. 17500kg illegal food products are confiscated yearly at the Frankfurt International Airport. The import of such potentially contaminated products can lead to the introduction of uncommon diseases into Germany. Trichinellosis and Brucellosis are typical import diseases, which can be contracted in foreign countries or acquired through the consumption of imported contaminated foods. In order to assess the risk of introduction of the described diseases, illegal food products, which have been confiscated by airport customs, will be analysed for the presence of Trichinella and Brucella.
