Project

Project code: 2803OE379
Contract period: 01.06.2005 - 31.10.2007
Budget: 198,982 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

By the standards of the EU organic regulation EC Regulation 1804/1999, including the also an outlet for suckling sows and prescribes the minimum duration suckle sets to 40 days, the eco sows experiencing a change in attitude. The group housing of sows sows seems suitable as a production method for both animal welfare and the economy in organic pig production to meet. In particular, the combined group housing of sows sows (14 days in solitary bay, followed by group housing of sows sows) is contrary to the species-specific behavior of pigs. In wild pig populations in the pig secretes a few days before giving birth on the pack to about 10 to 14 days postpartum return to the group of sows. By using the combined group holding up the chronological order is accepted. In addition to, the species-specific behavior appropriate animal husbandry, it is primarily economic reasons in favor of this attitude. Through the group suckling can Abferkelplätze be saved, because the useful life of the sow places (14 days instead of 40 days) is significantly reduced. The group housing of sows, piglets leaders can also take place in simple buildings (barns, old buildings) with leakage. The use of the production process 'group housing of sows sows' is, however, significantly higher demands on the herd management. To piglet losses and / or a 'growing apart' to avoid groups of piglets, careful planning is required of lactation. In Switzerland and Austria in this regard is experience from practice and research. Although the interest in the introduction of the production process in Germany from above Reasons is very large, the process in this country so far not widespread. The commercial farms have been no recommendations and strategies for successful establishment of the production process 'group suckling piglet leading sows' are available. The goal of the project is to practice the results and experiences from pig breeding farms, the group suckling sows, to collect and analyze. Since the procedure in Germany is hardly yet established, the surveys are carried out mainly on farms in Switzerland and Austria. In a further step, a management approach to group housing of sows sows is designed. The results will be made directly to the Organic Farming sow farms accessible by consultants with the aim of establishing the production system to be permanently on the farms. In parallel with this work, observations of outlet utilization of piglets and sows are recorded. These observations provide insights into the meaning and use of the publication outlet for sows and piglets.
