Project code: 2808HS029
Contract period: 18.05.2009 - 31.03.2012
Budget: 302,931 Euro
Purpose of research: Basic research

The aim of this project is the fulfillment of a decision support requirements of the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) scientific studies on the prevalence of MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) carried out in the stable air and exhaust air from animal facilities. These are field studies of various stable and ventilation systems be carried out by pigs, cattle and poultry farms, which allows to estimate the risk of airborne transmission of MRSA to other livestock, or residents in the vicinity of livestock buildings. Specifically, it describes the main MRSA emission sources based on qualitative evidence obtained in positive farms and MRSA quantitatively determined in the stable air and stable air with before on their suitability tested air sampling procedure to the one the spread and the risk of transmission in the barn and on the other hand, the emission load from the to estimate the stable. With the selected measurement method MRSA are measured in parallel in windward and leeward of the test-positive stables qualitatively and quantitatively, while on-site measurement of the meteorological conditions involving DWD weather data. The MRSA Susceptibility to soil and plant surfaces is sampled using swabs at various distances in the stable environment, taking into account the prevailing environmental factors and in addition is a standard sedimentation method with artificial, defined collection area for detection of MRSA in various places within and outside the stables used. The results of the planned project will feed into the foundations of German law-making for the surveillance of animal populations in the incidence of MRSA and at Community level for the design of the zoonosis monitoring are used in accordance with Directive 2003/99/EC.
