Collaborative project: Development, testing and evaluation of a positioning system and its software applications for cattle on pastures in lowlands and mountainous regions based on GPS- and GSM-technology - subproject 1

Project

Project code: 3979, 28154T2110
Contract period: 15.10.2011 - 31.07.2016
Budget: 326,725 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Keywords: Alpine farming

In order to reduce workload in agriculture especially unter alpine conditions a new GPS-GSM-cattle tracking system was developed and successfully tested by the Institute for Agriuculture Engineering and Animal Husbandry in Freising and the company Blaupunkt Telematics, Germany. Furthermore the potential to reduce workload peaks through the application of such a tracking system was analysed. The results showed a potential for optimizing the workload of a herdsman by elimination of time spent to search lost animals and reduction of time needed to control animals on the pasture. The tracking system will not only assist the herdsman with localization of animals but also with geo-fencing and health as well as heat monitoring functions in order to help with decision making related to optimization of pasture and animal management. Great potential of such a system is seen not only in Europe but on rangeland all over the world.
