Purpose of research: Applied research

The livestock farming is some farming systems on straw. Particularly in pigs to certain toxins from molds (mycotoxins =) are particularly sensitive, is currently being discussed whether the straw posture does not increase the mycotoxin contamination of the animals. Currently, the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health, Animal Nutrition Section, advise on the introduction of EC-wide orientation values ​​for mycotoxins, including deoxynivalenol and zearalenone for that feed. As for mycotoxin contamination of straw, there are no systematic investigations in this project are to be collected nationwide straw samples as part of a screening and various mycotoxins (deoxynivalenol and other trichothecenes, zearalenone and ochratoxin A) were examined. In addition, to be checked (by suitable animal studies) to what extent the bioavailability of selected mycotoxins (DON, ZEA) straw differs from that of the cereal grains as possible matrix effects can lead to differences in toxin release in the digestive tract. Further studies should be conducted to toxin concentration during the straw storage under defined conditions. As a result of these investigations it will be possible to assess the hazard potential of mycotoxins from straw better.
