Development of Microalgae concentrates as feed for Copepods for application in marine aquaculture (MiCo)
Project
Project code: 2817300110
Contract period: 06.03.2012
- 05.03.2015
Budget: 153,412 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Copepods are well known as optimal feed for larvae of many fishspecies. In general copepods can be produced based on marine microalgae. However the species of microalgae used plays an important role. The production of suitable microalgae is a great challenge for the hatcheries as most of these algae are difficult to produce. Suitable microalgae are not available on the market as a storable product. Hence the aim of this project is to evaluate the conditions for commercial production of algae suited for copepod production, to harvest these algae and formulate marketable products from it. First there will be growth experiments with different algae species. The biomass will be used to develop gentle harvesting techniques that do not destroy the algae. The formulation of the products will include fresh and frozen biomass. Based on these findings the algae will be grown in a greenhouse at 1000L capacity. The Gesellschaft für marine Aquakultur will test the algae as feed for copepods on a contract basis. In order to enable a quality control and optimization of the algae production the fatty acids of the algae and of the copepods will be determined analytically.
