Collaborative project: Development of a new automatic measurement method for securing a complete bleeding of slaugther pigs – Subproject 2
Project
Project code: 2816800511
Contract period: 01.03.2012
- 28.02.2014
Budget: 88,987 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
The aim of the project was the development of an automated control system to detect the bleeding rate in each individual pig using hollow knife technique . Within the project, an integrated control system based on infrared sensor technology has been developed. The system measures the heating of the surface of the individual blood-collecting-tank by inflowing blood. From gathered data the slope is calculated. By measuring the initial blood rise immediately after beginning of bleeding the result is readily available. No significant relation between slope and subsequent occurrence of death of the animals was found (until now). Animals with optimum bleeding showed a slight improvement of meat quality. The development of an automated bleeding control system helps to improve animal welfare and meets statutory requirements and consumer expectations with regard to human slaughter.
