Purpose of research: Experimental development

The objective of this project was to determine whether the level of skatole and androstenone, the two main components responsible for boar taint, can be decreased by feeding polyphenol-rich plant products (grape seed and grape marc meal extract, spent hops, green tea extract) and/or prebiotics (fructooligosacchrides, gluconic acid) without negatively influencing the growth and performance of the boars. The addition of polyphenol-rich plant extracts and prebiotics did not result in a significant reduction of androstenone and skatole in backfat of boars. The hypothesis that an activation of the Nrf2 pathway and drug metabolism results in a reduction of androstenone and skatole in backfat of boars could not be confirmed. However, the use of polyphenol-rich plant extracts and prebiotics still remains interesting as feed additives with regard to an improvement of performance in animal nutrition.
