The project “AquaEdel – Optimization of fine fish production in recirculating aquaculture systems” is characterised by a multidisciplinary research approach along the product chain. Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) offer a huge potential for sustainable aquaculture development in the context of national and international legislation. Nevertheless, economic viability and limited competiveness of fish produced in RAS are major constraints actually. Thus, the main research focus of AquaEdel was the optimization of various steps of fish production in RAS accompanied with specific economical evaluations. Turbot with its specific attributes was chosen as model for a high market value fish. In detail, subprojects 1 to 5 focused on biological issues and subprojects 6 to 8 dealt with specific farming technologies while subprojects 10 to 11evaluated market development and consumer perceptions. It was shown that each step of fish production in RAS provide manifold optimization potential due to limited knowledge about environmental interaction on biology of turbot. In addition, main outcomes show a high transferability to the production of other niche fish with high market value.
